The History of Wine Making in Cyprus

Exactly to know, how far back wine production in Cyprus goes, is difficult. But there are some hints, that Cypriot wines were being traded as early as 2300 BC. A shipwreck carrying over 2500 amphorae was discovered in 1999. Its origin and destination is unknown, but it must have worked along the trade route between Greece and Egypt. Recently there were other discoveries of the Bronze Age near the village of Pyrgos.

Dr. Porphyrios Dikaios, a Cypriot archaeologist and once curator of the Cyprus Museum, carried out excavations nearby Erimi village between 1932 and 1935. The unearthed pottery fragments were dated to the chalcolithic period (between 3500 BC to 3000 BC).
